HIKE LEADER
HIKE LEADER
The BHC has hike leaders that are prepared to lead new and veteran hikers on various trails, both marked trails and unmarked trails. We welcome new hiker leaders that are comfortable with leading hikers of varying experience and ability levels, knowing the trails, being prepared for basic emergencies, and being able to prepare a pre-hike notice and a post-hike report. Training for new hike leaders is available for those interested.
TRAIL MAINTAINER (Love your own piece of trail to death)
We are an affiliate club of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference. Currently we maintain 35 miles of trail for the conference. As a trail maintainer, you assume responsibility for a section of the Finger Lakes Trail, generally 1 or 2 miles in length, and do maintenance work as needed, minimally 3 times a year. Your duties include removing debris and branches from the trail, cutting back leafy vegetation, cutting grass and weeds on the trail, picking up litter, refreshing blazing, and assessing other trail issues and reporting to our Regional Trail Coordinator on any issues, help needed, and number of volunteer hours worked.
LARGER TRAIL WORK PROJECTS
Now and then, we need volunteers to work on projects that are too big for trail maintainers alone. Projects might be repairing trail erosion, clearing downed trees, repairing bridges and structures, and the like. Projects are usually one day or less and involve camaraderie, laughter, and food at the end.
Recently the club did a bridge rebuild over Bowman Creek. Watch the reels of the build on Instagram: www.instagram.com/reels/DPIPo6Nkfo0/
