1 - SUNDAY

FLT in Pharsalia Woods

We just finished one annual Sidote Hike so it is time to plan for the next one. This Sunday morning 1 August 2010 we will hike the FLT in a loop from Hoag + Stewart roads north to almost Center Road and then return via the Blue Trail. The entire hike is projected to be about 7 miles. This will give us an opportunity to review those 2 possible lean-to sites and check out the round-leaved orchid. Meet at lot behind HoJo in Norwich at 08:00. Contact me to meet elsewhere. 607-336-4628

2 - MONDAY

3- TUESDAY

This month we are meeting at the Y at 6:30pm and will carpool to hike at Meads Pond and then will return to the Y for the meeting. PLEASE note the TIME change and plan to dress to hike. This short hike will be the program for our meeting this month.

This Sunday morning, 8 August 2010, we will hike in the area around Balsam Pond, about 5 miles or so. The exact route is yet to be determined. There may be some unavoidable bushwhacking. We are going here to check whether the Ladies' Tresses Orchids are blooming. They may be early this year. Meet at HoJo at 08:00 or at the Pond parking lot at the dam at 08:40. Contact me to meet elsewhere 607-336-4628 or windsorda@yahoo.com

15 - FLT Pharsalia

This hike will have 2 parts, a short and a long, but we will all start together. The first will be INTERGENERATIONAL consisting of kids, geezers, and in betweens. It will be led by John Elia along his section of the FLT, between Jackson Pond on John Smith Road and the former YMCA/CCC camp on Elmer Jackson Road, a distance of 1 mile. John is bringing his grandchildren and invites other hikers to bring theirs. They will return on that same trail.

The rest of us will continue for at least 4 more miles, on low traffic roads and the FLT.

This is a good opportunity for hikers who want to walk the FLT, but not very far.

We will meet at the lot behind HoJo at 08:00 or at the parking area on the south end of Jackson Pond at 08:35. Questions? Don at 607-336-4628 or John at 336-4282.

Let us get out of Pharsalia this week. We will leave a car on Pheasant Farm-Burdick Road off Route 23 and then motor west to Bentley-Gramch Road, where we will park. We will then hike south to Birdlebough Road and take it east to Pheasant Farm-Burdick Road. Whereupon we will trck north to our parked car. The total distace will be about 5 miles. This should be a nice pleasant walk, with some inevitable hills. Meet at 08:00 at the crowded lot behind Denny's/HoJo. Contact me to meet elsewhere, 607-336-4628.

29  Pharsalia Woods Hike: This is the last hike in the series exploring the proposed reroute of the FLT in the Pharsalia Woods. We will be meeting at HOJO's parking lot at 8am and then at the FLT trail head parking spot on the north end of Fred Stewart Road approx 0.1 mile south of Center Road at approx 8:20am.

This is going to be a challenging and lengthy loop hike, at least 7 miles. The hike will feature bushwhacking on New Michigan S.F., boundary line hiking and road hiking on the PWMA, and overall very little distance on the FLT.

Also, perhaps foolishly, but in the name of thoroughly examining all options, we will attempt to find a reasonable place to descend into the gorge and cross the creek on the PWMA between Elmer Jackson and Benedict Hill Roads. The intent is to find a logical reroute that retains as much of the existing trail as possible. For those that are unable or concerned about making the descent, the hike will have an alternate ending following roads on the PWMA led by Rebecca and James. This will shorten the hike by nearly a mile for those that choose this option.

This hike is subject to rescheduling if the weather is not favorable.

Short slow hike - Tues 31 Aug 10 - Barlow Swamp, Pharsalia

Barlow swamp lies in the vast area west of North Road and south of Center Road in the New Michigan State Forest in Pharsalia. I have been prowling around in there whenever I can, looking for bog plants.

Next Tuesday 31 August, I will be going again. Join me if you enjoy slow short hikes bushwhacking in swamps. We will meet at the HoJo lot at 9:00. Bring a lunch/drink. We should be out of the woods by 2:00 pm. We will cover only 2 miles at most - but it will take us about 4 hours. 607-336-4628

Pitcher+German

Let us avoid Pharsalia this week! Instead, we go to nearby Pitcher and German to hike on roads with light traffic.

We will leave a car on Pheasant Farm-Burdick Road off Route 23 and then motor west to Bentley-Gramch Road, where we will park. We will then hike south to Birdlebough Road and take it east to Pheasant Farm-Burdick Road. Whereupon we will trek north to our parked car. The total distance will be about 5 miles. This should be a nice pleasant walk, with some inevitable hills. Meet at 08:00 in the crowded lot behind Denny's/HoJo. Contact me to meet elsewhere, 607-336-4628.

7 Please join us for the monthly meeting of the FLT - Bullthistle Hiking Club this coming Tuesday, 7 September at 7pm in the Community Room at the Norwich YMCA. This month Chris Sprague will do a program about his experiences fighting forest fires out west. It should be very interesting.

4Our annual visit to Jam Pond will be this Sunday, 4 July 2010, Independence Day. Flaunt your independence of Bourgeois values and hike for rare wildflowers instead! Jam Pond is our most precious natural resource, a marvelous legacy of the glaciers. Bring waterproof boots, as well as hiking boots. We will hike about 4 miles or so after the bog walk, on such intriguing roads as Rabbit Path and Shingle Street, in the Five-Streams State Forest. Meet at lot behind HoJo at 08:00 and 08:20 at the Outpost. Contact me to meet elsewhere 607-336-4628.

This Sunday 11 July 2010 we will hike in the Partridge Ridge State Forest. Our mission is to scope out the short hike for the Sidote Hike on Saturday 24 July 10. Although the short hike is only 2 miles, we will continue hiking to get in our 5 miles. Folks wanting to do only the short hike can depart right after, about 10:30.

We will visit the late Winston Braxton's bench. Winston was a pioneer of the FLT. In fact he laid out many of its trails. Winston was a member of the ADK (Adirondack Hiking Cluc) and his famous bench was erected by that club. Winston's ashes were dispersed around his bench. Legend has it that when you sit on the bench and talk (outloud) to Winston, you will have good luck for the upcoming year. Therefore, it is certainly prudent to visit Winston's bench annually. So why take chances? Join us on Sunday. Meet 08:00 in lot behind HoJo in Norwich or at the fishing lot on State Route 26 and the FLT at 08:50. Talk to Winston. Get lucky!

18 Otselic SF
The hike on Sunday morning 18 July 2010 will be longer and more strenuous than usual. We will be doing a dry (we hope) run of the Sidote Long Hike scheduled for Saturday 24 July. We will park at the Handicap Access Site where the Otselic River crosses State Route 26. The bridge is the landmark. The lot is south of the bridge.

We will hike up Truman Hill on the FLT and continue south on the FLT until we reach Winston Braxton's bench. Whereupon, those of us who want good luck will sit on the bench and talk out loud to Winston, whose ashes surround the bench. After that ceremony, we will return to our pre-heated vehicles via the Truck Trail. It will be about 7 miles round trip.

Meet at 08:00 in the lot behing HoJo or at 08:45 at the lot on Route 26. Bring enough to drink and a snack.

The 2010 Ed Sidote Hike will be on July 24 at 9am on Truman Hill, Otselic, Chenango County, Map M22.

Hike: This will be a 7-mile loop over Truman Hill in the Partridge Ridge State Forest (labeled as Otselic State Forest on Map M22). First half will be on the FLT from NY State Route 26 to Will Warner Road, with a return via the parallel DEC Truck Trail. A shorter 2-mile hike will also be offered. Both hikes will pass by the Winston Bruxton Memorial Bench.

Meet: 9:00 AM at the Fishing Access Site on NY State Route 26 just below the intersection with Bucks Brook Road in the Town of Otselic, Chenango County. Hike will start at 09:30, after everyone has had a chance to greet the hike's namesake, Ed Sidote. Or see carpooling info below.

Directions: The fishing access is well marked, it is on NY State Route 26 approximately 2 miles south of the village of Otselic in the northwest corner of Chenango County, where NY State Route 26 and the FLT cross the Otselic River. It's milepost 19.1 on Map M22.

Carpooling: From the Norwich area, meet at 8:00 in the parking lot behind Howard Johnson motel on NY State Route 12 and carpool to the hike site. From the Binghamton area, please contact Larry Blumberg, LBlumberg@stny. rr.com or 607-797-0912
